Qualifications PhD Stellenbosch University He is currently a Full Professor in the Department of Geography and Environmental Management and Energy Studies, Faculty of Science, University of Johannesburg, South Africa. Prof Walter Musakwa holds a PhD in Geography and Environmental Studies from Stellenbosch University. His main research focus areas are conservation planning, human nature relationships, ecosystem services, climate change, indigenous knowledge systems, sustainable development, and livelihoods. A major focus of his research is also the use of earth observation, geographic information systems in environmental management and crop analysis. He has been a principal and co-investigator on several research projects on his focus areas. He is a former visiting research fellow of The World Academy of Sciences-German Research Foundation (TWAS-DFG), Member of The International Geographical Union (IGU) Commission on Geography for Future Earth: Coupled Human-Earth Systems for Sustainability. He is also an Editorial board member for the Geospatial Information Science Journal and Geography and Sustainability Journal.
