Dr Hervé Wabo is a multidisciplinary geologist. He is currently a Research Associate with a teaching portfolio, and also the manager of the UJ Paleomagnetism Laboratory. He was previously a post-doctoral fellow at UJ (with NRF Freestanding Grant) from Jan. 2014 to Dec. 2015, after a PhD from the same institution (March 2009 – Feb. 2013). Prior to his arrival at UJ, Dr. Wabo worked from March 2003 to Dec. 2008 as a field geologist and project manager involved in various geophysical mapping and exploration projects in Central Africa (Cameroon, Gabon, Chad, Nigeria, etc…). As a lecturer, Dr Wabo has been involved in delivering modules such as Structural Geology and Plate Tectonics (GLG02B2), Engineering Geology (GMESCA2) and Surface and Groundwater Hydrology (WSSM811). Dr Wabo’s scientific interests are on major changes of the Earth system through time, with implications for formation of energy resources and ore deposits. As a multidisciplinary geologist, he has been involved in many scientific projects with a focus on paleomagnetism and plate tectonics, precise geochronology, magmatism, sedimentology, economic geology, hydrogeology etc. His role as manager of the UJ Paleomagnetism Laboratory is to promote the Facility as a hub for such research in the world. His duties include facilitating lab competence for academics and industry members, the respect of international standards in operational activities in the Facility, the development and implementation of new analytical methods and procedures for geoscience applications, and the training and supervision of postgrads (MSc and PhD) and post-docs.
