Makeda is a junior lecturer in the Department of Childhood Education at the University of Johannesburg. She has taught a range of modules in the department and gained valuable practical experience teaching in Foundation Phase classrooms before returning to academia. Her academic journey began in 2014 when she completed a Bachelor’s degree in Foundation Phase Education at the University of the Witwatersrand. She went on to pursue postgraduate studies at the University of Johannesburg, where she earned both her Honours and Master’s degrees. Makeda’s research focuses on reading development in young children, with a particular interest in the role of picturebooks in supporting literacy and meaning-making in the early years.
