Thobekile Masombuka is a lecturer in the English Department at the University of Johannesburg. Her research delves into the role of religion and spirituality in shaping cultural narratives, symbols, and meanings and how these elements influence individual and collective identities. Generally, her research interests include African contemporary literature, postcolonial theories, and African speculative fiction. Her recent article, “Gods for Sale: Religious Appropriation and Capitalism in Okey Ndibe’s Foreign Gods Inc.” (2024), observes how the commodification of gods in the novel represents religious appropriation and the religiosity of Western capitalism.
