Charl Hugo is an emeritus professor of law at the University of Johannesburg. Formerly he was an attorney (1985-2005), an academic (lecturer, senior lecturer and professor) at the University of Stellenbosch (1985-2005), an advocate practicing at the Cape Bar (2006-2012) and professor of banking law at the University of Johannesburg (2013-2022) where he also headed the Centre for Banking Law. He has published widely in commercial law, especially banking law – with a strong focus on payment in international trade and independent guarantees. He has held appointments as visiting professor at the University of Cape Coast (Ghana), the Northwest University (Potchefstroom), the International University (Bruchsal, Germany) and the University of Stellenbosch. He holds the degrees BA (Law) and LLB (University of Pretoria), LLM (University of South Africa) and LLD (University of Stellenbosch) and is a trained commercial mediator. He lives in the Western Cape with his wife Annatjie.
