Gustavo de Carvalho

Overview

Gustavo de Carvalho is a Senior Researcher on African Governance and Diplomacy at the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) and a Senior Research Associate at the Qatar–South Africa Centre for Peace and Intercultural Understanding (CPIU) at the University of Johannesburg. His work bridges scholarship and practice on peacebuilding, mediation, and diplomacy, with a particular focus on the role of emerging powers and the Global South in shaping global governance. He has extensive experience with the United Nations, African Union, and international think tanks, contributing to policy design, training, and evaluations in conflict-affected settings across Africa. His current doctoral research at the University of the Witwatersrand examines Brazil and South Africa’s strategies in navigating a shifting global order.
